View of Ishigaki Port from the back of the Lena Steamship

Yesterday, the Lena Steamship a ferry from Hualien to Ishigaki made it's trial run in order to reestablish regularly scheduled trips. Since Ryukyu Kaiun took the last passenger ferry out of service in 2007 and Arimura Sangyo went out of business altogether in 2008, there have been no scheduled services to Taiwan.

The distance between Yonaguni and Hualien City, Taiwan is 111 km (69 mi) and therefore closer than Ishigaki, which is 118 km (73 mi) away. Unfortunately there has never been a direct route to Yonaguni from Hualien for immigration reasons. Yonaguni is considered a key diving destination due to the Yonaguni Monument (underwater ruins) found off it's shores and it's schools of hammerhead sharks in the winter months. A popular dive trip for the Chinese New Year.
